Fiddling the Time Away
This. Sounds. Amazing. And kind of fitting for the week of St. Patrick's Day.
The not-to-be-missed musical event took place on April 13, 1926, at Cuba City's Auditorium, which was located above the former Ford garage across from City Hall.
The Cuba City News-Herald had this to say after the contest:
"The Old Fiddlers' Contest presented at the Auditorium, Tuesday evening, under the management of E. G. Louthain made a hit.
First place in the Old Fiddlers' Contest was won by J. B. Martin, a Civil War veteran, of Darlington. Thos. Lowery of Benton won second. A five-year-old lassie drew down the house with her dancing, and Agnes Horn of Platteville danced the Charleston.
Thos. Byrne drew a "big hand" with his clog dancing and his son Cyril made a hit with his clever work on the harmonica. Cal Winn of Benton also played the mouth-organ.
Miss Ball of Jenkynsville delightfully rendered two vocal numbers. A. C. Ames of Monroe danced the "burr-head" and his one-man band outfit was a scream.
After the program a social dance was enjoyed."
Winners of this event and a similar competition in Shullsburg would compete the following evening in Benton for top honors.
