Harry Kilkelly and the Silver Mane Pony Sale

Thanks to Alexander Bare for sharing this photograph of H. P. "Harry" Kilkelly in his trophy-lined office. According to the family, this shot was taken by Jim Roberts, editor of The American Shetland Pony Journal, for the Silver Mane Production Pony Sale held July 22, 1961 on the Kilkelly farm.

The Tri-County Press had this to say about the event:

"A crowd of 1500 people attended the Silver Mane Pony sale on Saturday, which featured the blood of Colonel Cody. The sale started at 10 A. M. at the Silver mane Pony Farms, owned by H. P. Kilkelly and sons. The farm is 1/2 mile east of Cuba City on Hwy H. Nearly 60 head were offered for sale that had blood of Colonel Cody, the late, famous black stallion that died 2 years ago, at the advanced age of 28 years. About 800 automobiles were parked around the area. The highest bid was $3400 for Chief Cody." (July 27, 1961)

In addition to his passion for raising and showing ponies, Harry Kilkelly operated a dairy farm, served as Cuba City's mayor from 1950-1960, and was a partner in the Kellner Hardware Store.
