High Rollers in Cuba City

Thank you to Dennis Evans for sharing this photograph of a poker game in progress, reportedly at a Cuba City saloon, circa 1910. Dennis's grandfather, Roscoe Evans, is showing his cards to the camera. The other gentlemen are unidentified.

Cuba City had a reputation for illicit gambling activity in the early 1900s. The raid described below took place at the Wiederhold saloon, located where Doolittle's is today. It is referred to as an "ex-saloon" in this article because Prohibition was in effect and, theoretically, alcohol was not being served at the establishment.

Lancaster Herald article, published in the Cuba City News-Herald (July 23, 1920).
