Sampling Wine
On today, National Drink Wine Day, here is proof that great wine could be found in Cuba City from the very beginning. This advertisement was published in the Galena Daily Gazette on September 20, 1876, just a year after the town was founded.
William McCrea operated the Depot Saloon beside the railroad station, where the former Cuba City Post Office stands on Main and Webster. The saloon is visible in this early photo on the bottom left.
William McCrea was my great-great grandfather. He came to the US in 1849 or 1850, landing in New Orleans. He then moved to St. Louis for a short time, where he eldest son, John, was born (1852). He, Mary and John moved in about 1853 or 1854 to Smelser Township, Grant Co., Wisconsin. He lived and farmed in Lafayette Co., Wisconsin, for 15 years prior to his death at the age of 91 in 1914. His obituary in the January 23, 1914 issue of the Benton “Advocate” listed him as “one of the oldest citizens in this community.”
