Night Scene

The nights are long at this time of year, but things are looking bright in Cuba City. This rare evening photograph was taken between 1915-1919. It captures the intersection of Main and Clay Street, facing north. Florine's Drug Store (Subway today) is on the left and the First National Bank (later Cuba City State Bank) is on the right.

A fun detail: Florine's is advertising Shurtleff's Purity Ice Cream, made in Janesville, Wisconsin.

  1. My parents owned and operated Florine's from 1954 through the mid-1960s. We only served Shurtleff ice cream even then. It was excellent and I wonder if it is still made.

That was a great shot of a very familiar scene from my childhood. We lived above the store and banked across the street.
