The bullet pencil was a 20th-century advertising trend, and Cuba City businesses were among those handing them out for promotions. Meant to resemble bullet cartridges, actual casings were even used in the earliest versions.

The First National Bank bullet pencil, manufactured by the U. O. Colson Co. in Paris, Illinois, dates to before 1928. The Kivlahan Coal Company pencil looks to be a bit later and was made sometime before 1956.
