Riding the Rails

One hundred years ago today, the Cuba City News-Herald reported the following story about some intrepid Shullsburg motorists who got creative when snowy roads threatened to derail their travels:
AUTO ON RY. TRACK
On Wednesday afternoon, a Franklin car driven by Shullsburg parties got as far as the National roaster southeast of the city and found the roads blocked with snowdrifts. They were not to be outdone, however, so motored up the railroad track the rest of the distance. This is the first intimation we have of such a stunt being pulled off by anything but a "ford."
